PEP

WHAT IS PEP? 

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a series of HIV medicines taken to prevent HIV after possible exposure.

WHEN TO TAKE PEP?

PEP should be started as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours (3 days) of a potential exposure 

HOW TO TAKE PEP

PEP is a regimen of pills taken daily for at least 28 days. It is essential to take every pill as directed and not skip doses

WHEN TO SEEK PEP?

  • Unprotected sex

  • Condom broke

  • Sharing needles or other injection equipment 

  • Sexual assault 

EFFECTIVENESS 

PEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV by more than 80% 

OTHER PRECAUTIONS 

While taking PEP, you should continue to use other HIV prevention methods, such as condoms

PrEP

WHAT IS PrEP? 

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medicine that reduces the risk of getting HIV through sex or injection drug use 

HOW IT WORKS 

PrEP is taken as a pill or shot to prevent HIV from taking hold and spreading in the body. 

EFFECTIVENESS 

When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV 

  • Reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% 

  • Reduces the risk of getting HIV from injection drug use by at least 74% 

HOW AND WHEN TO TAKE PrEP 

  • Take 1 tablet every day, around the same time each day. Wait
