PEP and PrEP in Koh Samui: Where to Get It and How Quickly You Need It

If you have had a potential HIV exposure, you may be panicking — and time matters. This guide explains everything about PEP and PrEP availability in Koh Samui, including where to get it, how quickly you need to act, and what to expect from treatment.

What is PEP?

PEP stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is an emergency HIV medication taken after a potential exposure to HIV. PEP is a combination of antiretroviral drugs taken every day for 28 days. When started promptly, it significantly reduces — but does not completely eliminate — the risk of HIV infection.

The 72-Hour Window: Why You Must Act Fast

PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) of a potential HIV exposure to be effective. The sooner you start, the better. Ideally within 24 hours. After 72 hours, PEP is not recommended as it is unlikely to prevent infection.

Do not wait until morning. Do not wait until you feel ready to talk about it. Contact us now if you are within that window.

When is PEP Recommended?

PEP is recommended for HIV-negative people who have had:

  • Unprotected sex (anal or vaginal) with an HIV-positive person or someone of unknown status

  • A condom that broke or slipped during sex with a high-risk partner

  • Shared needles or injection equipment

  • Sexual assault

PEP at Samui Home Clinic

We stock PEP medications at our clinic and pharmacy. Here is what happens when you visit us:

  • Rapid HIV test to confirm you are currently HIV-negative

  • Assessment of the exposure risk and timing

  • Prescription and dispensing of 28-day PEP course

  • Full counselling and follow-up testing schedule

  • Repeat HIV testing at 4 weeks and 3 months

PEP Side Effects

PEP can cause side effects including nausea, fatigue, headache, and diarrhoea. These are usually mild and manageable. Our doctors can prescribe anti-nausea medication to help. It is important to complete the full 28-day course even if you feel well.

What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily pill taken by HIV-negative people to prevent HIV infection. When taken correctly, PrEP is more than 99% effective at preventing HIV transmission through sex. It is recommended for people at ongoing elevated risk of HIV.

PrEP at Samui Home Clinic

We prescribe, monitor, and supply PrEP at Samui Home Clinic and our Fisherman's Village Pharmacy. Starting PrEP requires:

  • HIV test confirming HIV-negative status

  • Kidney function blood test (as PrEP can affect kidneys)

  • STI screen

  • Prescription from our doctor

Ongoing PrEP users need quarterly HIV testing and 6-monthly kidney checks. We can manage all of this at our clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get PEP in Koh Samui at night or on weekends?

Our clinic is open Mon–Fri 9AM–7PM and Sat–Sun 9AM–5PM. For urgent out-of-hours PEP needs, contact our emergency line via WhatsApp at 080-669-6915 and we will advise.

How much does PEP cost in Koh Samui?

The cost of a 28-day PEP course varies. Contact us for current pricing. Some travel insurance policies may cover the cost — we can provide documentation for claims.

Does PEP work 100% of the time?

No. PEP significantly reduces risk but is not 100% effective. This is why HIV testing at 4 weeks and 3 months after the exposure is essential.

Can I get PrEP as a tourist in Koh Samui?

Yes. We can assess, prescribe, and dispense PrEP. We can also provide enough supply to cover your stay and help you arrange ongoing care when you return home.

What if I start PEP and then leave Koh Samui?

We will give you the full 28-day supply and written documentation so you can continue care and testing when you get home. The course must be completed.
